Boise School District Announces 
Principal Appointments 
 
The Boise School District announces the following principal appointments, effective the beginning of the 2013-14 school year:  
  

Bryce England - Principal, Longfellow Elementary School

 

Bryce England is a dedicated educator who has successfully served the students of the Boise School District in a variety of capacities since 1999.   He has worked as a science teacher (North Junior High School,  1999-2009), athletic director, wrestling and football coach, (North Junior High School, 2008-09)  summer school principal (2010), intern elementary school principal (Whitney and Liberty elementary schools, 2009-10), assistant junior high principal (South Junior High School, 2010-11) and currently serves as assistant principal at Borah High School.   

 

Mr. England earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Earth Science Education from the University of Idaho in 1999 and a Master of Educational Administration Degree from the University of Phoenix in 2008.  He is a positive, energetic educational leader who believes in the success of each and every child and he strives to build positive school-community relations that result in academic success for each student.  Mr. England is looking forward to returning to the elementary school level.   His strong administrative skills and dedication to providing excellent educational opportunities will serve him well as he begins his new position as Principal of Longfellow Elementary School.

 

 

Mark Jones - Principal, Adams Elementary School

 

Mark Jones is a respected instructional leader who has served Boise School District students since 1984.  He began his public school education career as a third and fifth grade teacher at Taft Elementary School where he worked from 1984 to 1989. From 1989 to 1997, Mark taught fifth grade students at Liberty Elementary School. From 1997 to 1998, he worked as Assistant Principal at Trail Wind and Riverside elementary schools.  He became Principal of Lowell Elementary School in 1999 and held that position until 2004. Mr. Jones then was selected to serve Maple Grove Elementary School students as that school's Principal in 2006 - a position he holds to this day.   

 

Mr. Jones is an energetic, passionate, and knowledgeable school leader who builds a positive school culture conducive to academic success for each and every student.  He is popular with students and staff members and is fond of referring to his favorite cultural icon, Rosie the Riveter ("We can do it!") as proof success is possible for each and every student.  Mark earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Boise State University in 1984 and a Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Idaho in 1998.  Most recently, Mark was awarded the Gem Distinguished Service Award from the Idaho Association of Elementary School Principals Association. Mr. Jones will bring a high level of commitment and dedication to educational excellence as he becomes the Principal of Adams Elementary School.   

 

 

Erin Kubena - Principal, Riverside Elementary School

 

Erin Kubena's career in public school education began in 2000 when she served as a Title One Math Teacher in the Meridian School District. Since that time, she has successfully held a variety of positions in the Boise School District, from elementary school teacher at Hawthorne Elementary School (2000-08), Driver's Education Coordinator at Fairmont and South junior high schools (2002-03), Summer School Principal at Franklin and Hawthorne elementary schools (2002-09), Intern Principal at Trail Wind and Koelsch elementary schools (2008-09) and Trail Wind and Horizon elementary schools ( 2009-10), Assistant Principal East Junior High School (2009-10),  Assistant Principal at East Junior High School and Riverside Elementary School (2010-12), to her current position as Assistant Principal at Horizon Elementary School.  

 

Erin earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Boise State University in 1999, a Master of Education Degree in Technology from Lesley University (Cambridge, MA) and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Idaho in 2007.  In each of the positions she has held, Mrs. Kubena has demonstrated a strong commitment and dedication to the students she serves and effective instructional leadership skills that have helped staff and students succeed in the classroom.  She is committed to school success for each and every student and will serve Riverside Elementary students well as their new Principal.   

 

    

Nick Smith - Principal, Lowell Elementary School 

 

Nick Smith is a dedicated, knowledgeable and effective education leader who has served Idaho's public school students in a variety of capacities since 2002.  Mr. Smith is currently the Chief Deputy Superintendent at the Idaho State Department of Education.  Prior to joining the Department, Mr. Smith served as a teacher in the Bliss School District where he taught History, American Government, Geography, Social Studies and Health.  He later took on the administrative principal duties of the Bliss Junior High and High School as the Dean of Students.  Mr. Smith joined the State Department of Education in January of 2006 as the Civic Education Coordinator working with Civic Education, Character Education and Service Learning programs. 

 

In January of 2013, Mr. Smith was promoted to Chief Deputy Superintendent.  In this capacity, he oversaw all of the state's educational programs and divisions including Elementary and Secondary Education Act programs, School Improvement, Special Education, Assessment, Content, Student Engagement and Post-Secondary Readiness, Teacher Certification and Professional Standards, Child Nutrition and Charter Schools.   

 

Mr. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Idaho in 2002 and a Master Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Idaho in 2006.  Growing up in a family of educators and through his experiences as an educator, Mr. Smith understands the important role that a principal plays in developing a positive culture and climate for students, staff and parents within the greater school community, while balancing that effort with the role of being a strong instructional leader.  He is excited to be returning to his educational roots in public education.
